The year 1972 was considered a banner year. After many failures, Oklahoma Farm Bureau finally won legislative referral of our plan to tax land on its use rather than its speculative value. State Question 486 passed in August, even with the “silent vote” counting against the measure. It was a good example of farm groups cooperating on an issue they all supported. The Tax Equality Committee raised the money and carried on the successful referendum. Although OKFB leaders did not realize it at the time, but actual implementation would prove to be just as tough as winning the election.
